Ten Years, In Print: Crafting the En Masse Book
To mark ten years of En Masse Architecture and Design, our team set out to create a lasting, physical record of the people, projects, and ideas that have shaped our practice. What began as hundreds of printed photographs pinned across our studio walls slowly evolved into a tactile archive: a linen-bound book, impressed with our blue logo and filled with the spaces and stories that define a decade of En Masse.
The process was between Partners Mike Shively & Lucas Goldbach along with Marketing & Studio Manager Madison Burman, working side by side to edit thousands of images and assemble the narrative of our work. Studio walls became a living timeline; covered in pinned photos, handwritten notes, and traces of the moments that make a practice more than a portfolio. What emerged was both a celebration and a reflection, and a reminder that the impact of architecture lies in the shared effort of so many partners and collaborators.
Inside, the book unfolds in four sections: Welcome, Production, Connection, and Repose.
Welcome speaks to the spirit of generosity and hospitality—how a home opens itself to others and how design creates a sense of belonging.
Production explores how energy moves between people and the spaces they inhabit, showing that design is as much empathy as it is artistry.
Connection celebrates the flow between people, light, and place, linking each project to the continuum of Chicago’s architectural history.
Repose captures the stillness and serenity that come from care, the quiet reward of craft made visible.
Mostly visual, the Ten-Year Book is less about text and more about atmosphere. It gathers ten years of work, collaboration, and friendship into a single object—a record of the time we’ve spent listening, building, and refining together. The book is a celebration of the beautiful work we’ve been able to create.
